Advantages and risks of the application of artificial intelligence in Defence
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of defence and security has revolutionised the way governments and armed forces address contemporary challenges.
However, like any powerful technology, AI has a double face: it offers strategic advantages, but it also carries latent risks that must be approached with caution and responsibility.
On the one hand, AI provides unprecedented accuracy and crucial support in strategic decision-making. By processing large volumes of data and detecting patterns, AI streamlines the analysis of information, enabling faster and more effective responses to critical situations. In addition, its ability to identify early threats, whether in terrorist activities or cyber intrusions, strengthens national security.
Optimizing resources and time is another significant advantage of AI in defense. Automating tedious and repetitive tasks frees up military personnel to perform higher-value activities, while reducing costs and improving logistics planning. Likewise, the development of autonomous systems, such as drones and unmanned vehicles, minimizes the risk to personnel in hostile environments, offering flexibility and efficiency in military operations.
Aware of the risks
However, the use of AI in defense also raises significant concerns. The vulnerability of defense systems to cyberattacks and the possibility of manipulation by adversaries are risks that cannot be afforded. On the other hand, ethical and legal dilemmas arise regarding responsibility for decisions made by autonomous machines.
AI algorithms, susceptible to bias, can lead to inappropriate decisions, and the proliferation of autonomous weapons raises concerns about the indiscriminate use of force and the risk of conflict. It is therefore imperative to address these issues from an ethical perspective to ensure a responsible and beneficial use of AI in defence.
“The delegation of autonomous decision-making to algorithms and the responsibility of machines in situations of conflict must be subject to rigorous scrutiny in order to preserve the balance between the transformative power of AI technology and global security. Only through an ethical and reflective approach will we be able to fully harness the strategic advantages of AI while mitigating its inherent risks.”
