Drone-Based Inspection of Visual Aids AENA Airports

Overview

AENA SME S.A., Spain’s leading airport operator, has entrusted our solution to conduct aerial inspections of runway visual aids using Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA/drones) across its network of 48 airports and 2 heliports. After winning the competitive tender, we have completed three years of successful execution, delivering high-quality results and full compliance with stringent technical and regulatory standards. The project now enters its fourth year, reinforcing AENA’s confidence in our innovative approach.

Characteristics
Client: AENA SME S.A.
Service: Drone-based Inspection of Visual Aids (PAPI, ALS, RWY lights)
Contract Duration: 4 years (annual inspections)
Estado actual: Year 1 underway

Challenges

The project required overcoming technical and operational challenges, including:

  • Compliance with strict safety and operational regulatory requirements in airport environments.
  • Performing precise inspections and calibrations under variable conditions (day/night) without disrupting operations.
  • Managing real-time coordination and communication with authorities and ground teams.
  • Ensuring accurate data collection, analysis, and digitalization for certified reporting

Solution Benefits

  • Precision and Reliability: High accuracy in verifying and calibrating PAPI systems and other visual aids.
  • Full Digitalization: Real-time data capture and processing for rapid report generation and continuous monitoring.
  • Operational Efficiency: Minimized runway occupancy time and reduced interference with airport operations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Alignment with international standards (EASA, FAA, ICAO) and AENA’s technical specifications.
  • Sustainability and Safety: Eco-efficient technology and safety protocols ensuring operational integrity and environmental care.
